Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
