The star has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 award prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the UK's grassroots music venues.

The star was given the cheque on mid-October as his third album People Watching was declared the top album of the previous year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part small stages had in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

He also participated, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges arising from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The idea that money from shows in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

He is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to good deeds.

Back when the band won the trophy in the mid-90s for their release their work, frontman Cocker stated that the band would contribute their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her award among several charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked new equipment," the artist told the media.

Previously, they donated their prize money to the community center that developed their band, alongside other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients the group contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was identified with the illness.

"The victory was ample," stated singer Small. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success affected another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had rescued a couple of local spots in that region, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in that area and the other in that location were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
