An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
