Administration Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the end of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
